To hear Truckfighters' music, is to hear the sounds of the desert. It's in their wide open ex-panse, it's in their grand open groove and dust-caked metal riffs. You can hear progression and imagination. This is a band bred on the California badlands, on sprawling vistas and parched wilderness.
There is just one thing. They're from Sweden.
"We have the exact opposite weather and landscape to California," says the band's guitarist Niklas 'Dango' Källgren. "But there is a wilderness there, so I think we share something with people who make music in desert landscapes: we both do it in places where there aren't many people around. Maybe that's why we can tap into those sounds. You can create big empty spaces in music whether you are in the California desert or whether you are in Sweden."
These are sounds that they have been making since Niklas teamed up with bassist and vocalist Oskar 'Ozo' Cedermalm in Orebro, Sweden in 2001.
A succession of drummers have come and gone – "We have a very Spinal Tap relationship with drummers," says Niklas, "our original drummer quit the band because he smoked too much weed, our next one damaged his wrists … we keep having problems" – but now the powerhouse playing of Andre 'Poncho' Kvarnström drives their groove.
Over the course of five EPs and three previous albums, they have honed, tautened and ex-panded their sound, moving from out-and-out riffing to more melodic, crafted songwriting. Yet, inherent in everything is the fuzzed-out mania that defines them.
"That fuzz is the sound in my head that I want to get out," says Niklas. "The new record just has more of everything we've ever done. It's melodic and groovy but very progressive too. The songwriting's better."
That new record was forged from jams that the band then worked hard to convert into songs. Importantly, they say they have never attempted to write to a style. Instead, their songs come from the heart.
"We never, ever sit down and work out what we're going to do, we just do it," says Ni-klas. "We try to make music that will last, that will be around for a long time. We're not aim-ing to write anything hip, we try to be timeless. We're not trying to adapt to anything that's popular or write hits, and I think that's our strength.
"I think people like us because they know we're writing music we love. We're not chasing a crowd, we're doing what makes us happy and that gives our songwriting a lot of integrity. We do things they way we like it."
It has earned them comparisons to Queens Of The Stone Age's early sound, and that band's singer Josh Homme is a fan who appeared in a 2011 documentary about Truckfighters.
"They're a big influence – I tell people that we sound like Queens Of The Stone Age and Tool, but we're definitely more metal that Queens Of The Stone Age," says Niklas. "We're more like their first album. We've got those fuzzy guitars, but we've got progression too."
And ambition. The desert rock scene in Sweden consists, more or less, of just them. Un-afraid to plough their own furrow, they have forged ahead and spend months on the road touring the world. Being in front of crowds, sweat-sodden and crazed is where they are happiest. It's why a Truckfighters show is such a wild, free-form, charged affair.
"Playing shows is the greatest thing you can do in a band. You can play people the music that you made, and see that exchange of energy," says Niklas. "The energy is the key, it's a give and take thing with the crowd. We get excited by the people there, the songs, the volume and the power and so we go a bit crazy. We don't allow things to get boring, we keep things new and exciting live. Every night when we play, we want the show to be crazy."
It's why they can't see anything changing soon. With their fourth album primed and ready to explode, they will be on the road for a long while yet: bringing the fuzz, the fury and desert sounds of Sweden to sweltering venues and raucous crowds. And as they're up there onstage, know that this is what they were born to do, this is what they love.
"It's important to point out that we do only what we love," says Niklas finally. "We don't really care what other people think of us, we're doing this for ourselves. We always have."

Greenleaf
Almost by definition, musical side projects aren't meant to last very long, but rather serve as brief, often one-time departures for musicians otherwise engaged with far more pressing or successful bands -- and that's why Greenleaf has proved itself to be anything but your typical "side project."

Yes, this Scandinavian music collective has gone through quite the revolving cast since their arrival on the scene, much like an auditory Y2K virus in that fateful millennium flip; but the one constant bond that has repeatedly drawn them together, every few years, like an irresistible gravitational force, is a shared musical vision, straddling the realms of stoner and alternative rock.

Such was the case when Greenleaf first assembled behind Lowrider vocalist Peter Bergstrand for that eponymous, year 2000 debut EP; welcomed Dozer frontman Fredrik Nordin for is 2001 follow-up, Revolution Rock; added Demon Cleaner guitarist Daniel Jansson for 2003's Secret Alphabets; integrated Truckfighters singer Oskar Cedermalm in time for 2007's Agents of Ahriman; and powered ahead behind reliable mainstay, guitarist Tommi Holappa, for 2012's Nest of Vipers.

Now, Greenleaf is on the move again, bidding Cedermalm "adieu" and saying a hearty "hola" to a tandem of new recruits in frontman Arvid Jonsson and drummer Sebastian Olsson, who joined Holappa and long-serving bassist Bengt Bäcke in time to record (incidentally, with no outside help, guest musicians, or other additives) what would become Greenleaf's next and fifth long-player, Trails and Passes, which is now ready for global release in May of 2014, via Small Stone Recordings.

And, as has always been the case with this ever-evolving sonic beast, the music magically draws out the best talents of whoever happens to be involved, resulting in a modern rock amalgam as impossible to simplify as it is futile to want to; after all simultaneously familiar and surprising new sounds seem to be the ultimate thread connecting Greenleaf's long career.

A career that now sees the group categorically divesting itself of any lingering "side project" associations (ask Holappa and he'll bluntly tell you it is Dozer that's become his "side project" these days) and graduating to well-deserved headline status — the better to take the Greenleaf name to the next level on the abundant strengths of Trails and Passes.
Cloud Catcher
Descending from within Denver's Rocky Mountains, Cloud Catcher have arrived. The trio consisting of Rory Rummings on guitar and vocals, Kam Wentworth on bass, and Jared Soloman Handman on drums have spent considerable time crafting their own brand of heavy cosmic rock. Cloud Catcher's riff driven and energy fueled performances have landed them the opportunity to have shared the stage with such notable acts as Mothership, Slow Season, Mondo Drag, Lecherous Gaze, Joy, Ape Machine, Black Pussy, Lord Dying, and many more. In 2015, their debut album, 'Enlightened Beyond Existence' had caught the attention of the local Colorado heavy music scene. The album exhibits some of the finest heavy rock and roll submerged in psychedelia this side of the Andromeda Galaxy.
'Enlightened Beyond Existence' channels the essence of early 70's-era hard rock, yet propels it so far beyond orbit, transmuting it with astral brilliance. Cloud Catcher resonates to those who worship heavy acts such as Captain Beyond, early Grand Funk Railroad, Spirit Caravan, and Earthless. The trio summons thick, fuzz-laiden, mountainous riffs, sub earthly jams, and the long lost art of guitar solos which unite in crushing harmony. Cloud Catcher has received the esoteric "cosmic nod" and is unrelentingly wielding it in an attempt to pry open the mind's eye of collective consciousness. Be forewarned...
Luna Sol
Luna Sol is a high mountain stoner rock band from Denver, Colorado, fronted by veteran singer and lead guitarist, David Angstrom (Hermano, Supafuzz). After a relaxing visit to Colorado in 2012, Angstrom packed his bags and relocated to the mountains just north of Denver, and started soaking in the strange, but relaxed, mountain communities around him. Inspired by the local news and folklore, Angstrom started writing the songs that would become "Blood Moon," and put together Luna Sol with local musicians, drummer, Pat Gill, guitarist and vocalist, Shanda Kolberg, and bassist and vocalist, Shannon Fahnestock.

A drive into the mountains with Angstrom clearly illustrates that "Blood Moon" captures the non-conforming and often reclusive lifestyle of the Rockies. Songs such as "Leadville," "Standley Lake," and "Death Mountain" are all entwined with stories from Angstrom that are reminiscent of bizarre mountain folklore or eerie bedtime tales read to children from books with colorful and enigmatic illustrations. Angstrom has clearly fallen in love with the morbid strangeness of his new homeland, and he manifests his passion with a sincere and fascinated curiosity on "Blood Moon."

"Blood Moon" was recorded at Sierra Estates in Colorado, and the album artwork designed by celebrated Denver tattoo artist, Christel Perkins, of Sol Tribe. The basic tracks were finished in a week, and in keeping with the long-standing tradition of the stoner and desert rock communities, members of the Luna Sol extended family tree contributed additional elements to the recording. John Garcia (Vista Chino, Hermano, Kyuss) adds vocals on "December," Dandy Brown (Hermano, Orquestra del Desierto) plays bass on "Mountain," Nick Oliveri (Vista Chino, Kyuss, Queens of the Stoneage) plays bass on "Pretty Rotten," Greg Martin (Kentucky Headhunters) contributes slide guitar on "Mountain," Dean Smith (Supafuzz) plays bass on "Bridges," Jason Groves (Supafuzz, Asylum on the Hill) plays bass on "In the Shadows," and Dizzy Reed (Guns and Roses) delivers a performance on the B3 keys for "Your War."

John Garcia calls "Blood Moon" "a dark, twisted ride down the mountain. It rocks." Indeed, "Blood Moon" is dark, heavy, and filled with massive hooks that haunt your mind and inspire you to keep the motor running until the journey of your favorite song has come to an end.
